Foundation year

In Study options

In Study options

A one year course designed to prepare students that have the ability to study for a typical bachelor’s degree but don’t have the qualifications to enter the course directly.

Our foundation years are integrated into typical bachelor’s degrees, meaning you will study for a total of four years (five years if you choose to complete a placement year).

Why choose a foundation year?

  • Foundation years are a direct pathway into higher education for students from non-traditional educational backgrounds and under-represented groups.
  • Foundation years include modules designed to develop your academic study skills, as well as teaching course-relevant subjects.
  • Depending on the nature of your chosen subject, you’ll practise traditional learning methods, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops, laboratory sessions, self-study and online learning in preparation for your degree.

How do I fund a foundation year?

You can apply to the Student Loans Company (SLC) for the following support:

  • Tuition Fee Loan – to cover the cost of your tuition fees
  • Maintenance Loan – to support you with living costs, such as food, accommodation and travel
